Publication for Planning and Design for Outdoor Sport and Play

As you may be aware Fields in Trust recently published Planning and Design for Outdoor Sport and Play the document which updates and supersedes our previous flagship publication The Six Acre Standard. The new publication continues to uphold  the original FIT recommendation that 6 acres of recreational space is required for every 1000 people and also provides a detailed framework of the issues relating to quantity, quality and accessibility of outdoor facilities for sport and play  and the importance of local assessments and standards.

We’re delighted to be producing the iconic Six Acre Standard in a new incarnation fit for the 21st century. Planning and Design for Outdoor Sport and Play (PAD) continues to uphold the original FIT recommendation that 6 acres of recreational space is required for every 1000 people – a benchmark which has become the accepted industry-wide standard since its inception in the 1930s. It also provides a detailed framework of the issues relating to quantity, quality and accessibility of outdoor facilities for sport and play and the importance of local assessments and standards.

As part of the new format we will be producing updates and supplements for Planning and Design for Outdoor Sport and Play on an annual subscription basis to ensure that this vital handbook is always completely up-to-date and keeps pace with current thinking and legislation.

Planned supplements for the first year include a series of technical illustrations – available by September – and summaries of planning guidance in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and are all available completely free of charge!

PAD is now available for purchase at a cost of £95, with a discount of 20% (purchase cost £75) for Fields in Trust members - including postage and packing.
